Lake Zurich, Illinois pushed a pair of runs across in the seventh inning to hand host Ozark High School a 5-4 setback in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday.
Ozark, now 2-1 on the season, will travel to Oklahoma on Friday to face Sperry and Saturday to play at nationally ranked Owasso.
Lake Zurich, from a suburb north of Chicago, jumped on top of Ozark with a run in the first as center fielder Sam Anslan singled and moved to second on a sacrifice by Corey Halicke. Joey DeBarnardis doubled to drive in the run.
Bears starting pitcher Brock Simon did not allow a hit through the first four innings. The left hander did face a bases loaded jam in the third after walking Corey Wiley and Brett Neill and hitting Levi Presley, but worked out of the game. Brock Simon struck out 4 batters in the first 4 innings.
Ozark starter Derek Harwell last just one inning because he fouled a pitch off his leg in the last of the first, and coach Mike Essick brought in reliever Ryne Armstrong.
Ryne Armstrong set down the first 9 batters he faced, striking out 2. But the Bears Reed Bergstrom doubled in the fifth and scored on an RBI single by Austin Schmeisser.
In the last of the fifth, Justin Johnson got Ozark going with a lead off singled. He moved to second on a ground out by Corey Wiley. With one out, Matt Jordan laid down a bunt for a hit, and the throw to first caused the Bears fielder to lay out for the catch - that was all Justin Johnson needed as he scored all the way from second on the play. Brett Neill was then hit by a pitch and Levi Presley drew a walk to load the bases.
Derek Harwell, who stayed in the game to play third base for Ozark, delivered a 2-run single, driving in Matt Jordan with the tying run and Brett Neill with the go-ahead run. Lake Zurich got out of the inning on a double play when right fielder Reed Bergstrom caught a fly and threw out a runner at the plate.
In the top of the sixth, the Bears tied the game when Joey DeBaranardis walked and Dan Zummo delivered a 2-out RBI double.
Ozark responded in the last of the sixth. Jon Neill started the inning with a single and Drew Crane entered the game as a courtesy runner. Chris Loveday followed with a single, then Justin Johnson sacrificed the runners to scoring position. Corey Wiley walked to load the bases and Matt Jordan grounded into a force out, driving in Neill with the go ahead run.
Lake Zurich center fielder Sam Anslan then made the defensive play of the game, diving headlong to rob Brett Neill of an RBI hit and end the Ozark sixth.
In the seventh, Tim Nolan greeted Ozark reliever Matt Jordan with a double. Jordan struck out a batter, then walked Austin Schmeisser. With two outs, Corey Halicke delivered the game-winning hit, a 2-run single.
Steve Cleary was the winning pitcher, working the final 2 innings without allowing a hit, although he did walk two batters. Brock Simon worked 4 and a third innings with 4 strike outs, giving up 3 hits and 2 walks and hitting a batter. Tyler Schmitz worked a third of an inning for the Bears.
Matt Jordan took the loss with an inning of work, striking out 1 and walking 2 (1 intentionally) while allowing 2 hits. Ryne Armstrong worked 5 innings, striking out 4 and giving up 2 runs and 3 hits with a walk. Derek Harwell worked the first, allowing a run and 2 hits.
