Freshman Tigers start 4-0

The Ozark High School freshman Tigers have started the 2008 season with a bang, compiling a 4-0 record while outscoring the opposition 68-7.

Coach Jim Hubbard’s squad opened the season with a 14-2 win at Waynesville. Andy Westfall was the winning pitcher, striking out 11 in 5 innings of work, with 1 walk. Ozark got good offensive production up and down the lineup: Cody Holzer had 2 singles, a double, 2 runs scored, 2 steals and 2 runs batted in; Jansen Pilkington finished with a single, a double, 3 runs scored, a steal and 2 RBI; Andy Westfall had a triple, reached safely in all 4 trips to the plate, scored 3 runs and drove in a run; Ben Boatwright singled, walked, scored twice and drove in 4 runs; Blake Martin singled twice, stole a base, scored a run and drove in 4 runs; Josh Johnson drove in a run; Nick Moody singled, walked and scored twice; Connor Nixon singled, walked twice and scored twice.

Ozark defeated Waynesville 16-0 in the nightcap, which ended early because of weather concerns. Matt Martin was the winning pitcher for Ozark, allowing no hits and striking out 2 in an innings of work. The Ozark lineup was productive. Andy Westfall reached base safely in all 3 of his trips to the plate with a single and walk, 2 runs scored, a steal and an RBI. Blake Gee also reached safely 3 times in 3 at bats with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. Matt Martin singled, scored twice and drove in a run. Hunter Kennon singled and scored. Derek Siems singled, walked and scored twice. Cody Holzer doubled, scored twice and drove in 2 runs. Connor Nixon singled, scored and drove in 2 for Ozark.

The Tigers beat Republic 23-0 in the first game of the Nixa Tournament. Matt Martin was the winning pitcher for Ozark, working 3 innings with 5 strike outs, 3 walks, and 0 hits, his second no hitter in as many starts, although both wins were shortened because of big offensive outbursts. Against Republic, the Tigers rolled from top to bottom of the lineup once again: Cody Holzer singled, walked twice, scored 3 runs, stole a base and drove in a run; Jansen Pilkington walked twice, scored 3 runs, stole a base and drove in 2; Andy Westfall had 2 singles, 2 walks, scored 4 runs, stole a base and drove in 3; Ben Boatwright had 2 singles, a triple, 3 runs scored and an RBI; Blake Martin had 2 singles, scored 3 runs, stole a base and drove in 3 runs; Matt Martin reached base safely 4 times, with 2 singles and 2 runs scored; Blake Gee singled, walked twice, scored and drove in 4 runs; Josh Johnson scored twice and stole a base; Connor Nixon scored twice, stole a base and drove in a run.

Ozark won the title contest in the Nixa Tournament with a 13-5 victory over the host Eagles.
